Miss Domesticity....

Good morning (or afternoon or evening) everyone! How was your (long) weekend?? I'm not sure how it's possible to be this exhausted after a long weekend, but that's certainly my current state! So many things that I have put off for weeks (ok, months) finally needed some level of attention and got just that and a bit extra this weekend. This mainly meant because Miss Domesticity in the flesh! Top on the list was a complete scrub-down of my apartment, which I took to beyond-spring-cleaning heights - imagine cleaning the baseboards, taking down the curtains and stripping to couch to wash the linens, and taking all the books off the shelves to clean and rearrange! In addition to the scrub-down that took place indoors, there was also a major clean-up needed on the patio literally transforming the space into one of my favorite places for the summer...I had breakfast there every morning, phone chats, and even some yoga. There is still much to be done...but I'll share pictures with you hopefully next week when I can also share a few pictures of some small but major changes in my apartment.... (hint: the picture above provides a little clue!)

Design Inspiration

With all this brightness, there was no escaping from this month's issue of World of Interiors since the yellow spread and Moroccan hiati panel being used as a headboard are beyond spectacular......

Happy (Long) Weekend!

Well, I'm off for the long weekend and will be refreshed when we meet up again on Tuesday! I'm looking forward to a leisurely weekend right here at home where I'm hoping to do a little bit of redecorate (which I'll of course share with you), maybe catch a movie or finally get over to the Corcocan Gallery, and of course there is jazz on the mall, a long bike ride, new bouquets of peonies to go around the apartment and potentially even some salsa dancing!!

What do you have lined up for the weekend?

Sounds of Africa: Asa

Last night I was feeling a little down and out, but then I heard tracks from the new Asa album and before I knew it, I was up and jamming to all her latest beats. The entire album, Beautiful Imperfection, is brilliant and makes me wish it was coming out sooner than this fall! But until then, you can listen to the album (mostly just samples of the tracks) on her facebook page and you can check out this video of her new release.

Guest Blogging....

In addition to the regular dosage of posts here, today you can also find me at the tumblr of global fashion label Edun, which I've blogged about before. Come on over to see what I'm sharing....

Summer of Headscarves

With the summer heat already blasting down on some of us, the allure of sun, beach, ocean, breeze and all that comes along with that fantasy is seriously beckoning! For the season, stylish goddesses have also thrown in headscarves which any African-loving soul can greatly appreciate. While my practical side seriously wonders how I could even begin to make such lovely head wraps (my head wrapping skills are limited at best in comparison to my sister who can make even toilet paper into a work of art worthy of any head) - let alone attempt to cool off in the ocean waves looking so fabulous - my "who me? practical? haha" side would rock any headscarf on my head as if I were Iman herself strutting down a runway!!

African Beads + DANNIJO

This is such a no-brainer! I love African trade beads + I love fun uses of said beads especially in jewelry = my newly found love of jewelry line DANNIJO!

Ahhh...these blankets...

Who could ever get tired of a Moroccan wedding blanket especially when they can make your bed so exciting and stylish?!?

Sculptures on the Table

This pictures makes me want to kick my own butt for not having more African sculptures (and a fab glass side table) to assemble in my home. I have a very nice one that I lugged from Mozambique, but it's huge and smaller ones would have also been nice....

Through the Lens: Michael Poliza

The more opportunities I get to see aerial shots, the more I realize just how much I love them. There is an abstract quality that is so much like abstract painting, it reminds me that photography is so much an art in addition to a medium to capture moments. This collection of aerial shots by Michael Poliza called Eyes over Africa highlights over 200 shot of the continent as seen from above....

Fab 5 Friday....

After 6 weeks in Iraq hanging out with a bunch of British (and Scottish) dudes, my whole music world has been invaded by British musicians....since my fingers refuse to hit the stop button, I figure I am as well bring you down this musical rabbit hole with me....not only are these individual songs brilliant (click the image to hear each song), these entire albums still have me tripped out even though they have been out for a while....

Sounds of Africa: Meklit Hadero

It seems like every week there is at least one artist where I find myself utterly shocked that I haven't shared him/her with you. This week, it's Ethiopian (SF-based) artist Meklit Hadero. Porto Franco Records says the following about her...

"If Joni Mitchell were East African and met Nina Simone for tea in San Francisco's Mission District, she might end up sounding like Meklit Hadero"

....and I honestly couldn't agree more. She has the prefect hippy vibe of Joni and the soulful sound of Nina all wrapped up in African goodness! I'm all for it. Click the picture to hear exactly what I'm talking about....

Sabre, Kids & Dali....

As I may have mentioned, as soon as I came back from Iraq, I jumped on a plane and headed for the sun blazing state of Florida. It was not only a time for me to catch up on some much needed sleep and beach laying, it was also a time for me to spend with my mom and sister for Mother's Day and also to see some friends that I hadn't seen in way too long (ok, one year, but that's a long time when you actually like the people). While I could bore you with the joys of doing nothing, I'm going to pass and tell you about three other things that continue to linger in the happy portion of my memory bank:

Sabre...I know, sunglasses aren't the really the thing of substance, but let me share.....I have wanted a pair of aviator sunglasses for over a year and a half and for the life of me, I just couldn't find one that had the right frames and actually fit my narrow face. Then I met up with a friend in Philly last summer and she had the perfect pair. Unfortunately, with the name "Dolce & Gabbana" on the side they were a little more $$ than I have any justification in paying so the sunglasses continued to elude me. The story ends when I landed in Florida and realized that I had left my other sunglasses at home. While walking on the boardwalk, I dove into a surf shop not really thinking I would find what I really wanted but sure that I needed something to shield me from the sunny blaze waiting for me outside and there they were, just perched up on the Sabre shelf. I tried them on and the hunt ended....the model of these favorite new sunglasses (pictured above) leads me to my next joyful experience....

Kids... Another highlight of my mini-vacation was getting to spend time with two adorable kids (ok, true, I also like their parents). While hanging out with a 3 yo and a 19 mo isn't usually at the top of any list of "things to do on vacation", I found it to be a wonderful and dare I say, educational, experience. While I have definitely spent time with my friends and their kids before, hanging out with these friends is truely a lesson in the day-to-day life of parenthood. From the crackhour wake up, to the music and swim lessons, to the multiple hits and misses in potty training, filled in with bursts of "I need a drink" (mostly from me!) and "darnit - forgot to bring the dog on this walk" and "don't run with a fork in your hand." There were also the precious moments when kids were asleep or in daycare and the house gained a silence that was almost deafening and I found myself missing the volume and chaotic energy they bring to any space they occupy. While I could only view the whole thing with the eyes of someone peering in while standing firmly behind very thick glass wall, the whole experience really brought home the reality that these little people radically change your whole world. As someone in her 30s, I'm suppose to be hearing ticking biological clocks, but instead, this experience deepened my committment to enjoy my present life as much as possible so that when the time for marriage and babies and all that business does arrive, I'm at least mentally ready for it.

Dali...the finally piece of lingering bliss from my holiday involves the painter Salvador Dali. Many many years ago when I was still a teenager, I fell in love with the work of this Spanish artist. Something in is surrealist paintings "spoke to me" at that time. Later, while living in Spain, I got the opportunity to visit his home which was amazing. Fast-forward 10+ years and I'm in Florida and a dinner party when an older gentleman starts telling me about the Dali museum in St. Petersburg. As a trustee, he knew everything there was to know about the history of the museum and tons about the artists and the collectors of his work. Two days after the conversation, I hoped on a bike and rode down to the museum for a chance to renew my love of this artist and the museum did not disappoint. With 96 oil paintings, drawings and watercolors all over the place, plus sculptures and photographs, this place is truly a shrine to the man himself. While I definitely enjoyed seeing his surrealists pieces, I also fell in love with his impressionist works from his early years, (including this piece above) as well as his drawings. Days later, I still find myself digging around the interwebs for more of his work (like this amazing amazing piece)....

Art Scene: Ehi Obinyan

Hole mole! Not even sure where to begin to express just how excited I am about the work of Liberian (by way of Nigeria where he spent a chunk of years before relocating to San Francisco) artist Ehi Obinyan. These watercolors are just a small sample of the amazing body of work that Obinyan has done. The bold colors so call my name and the fluidity of each piece has me just wanting more and more....

You can see more of Obinyan paintings here on Modern African Art or here at the Emmanuel Studio.

Summer Mood

It's very rare that I feature the same artist twice in the same week (at times it's barely even twice in the same year), but I just had to share these lovely shots that Milan Josipovic did for a South African catalog. The images have me so excited for summer!

Agyness in the Desert

It feels like it was just yesterday that I was writing about how fashion magazines needed to find new locations to shoot in Africa and next thing you know, I open up the May 2011 issue of Vogue UK to find a mega editorial spread shot in the abandoned town of Kolmanskop in Namibia! I featured a photography spread of this town by Helga Kohl and was definitely glad to see it highlighted again in such a creative way.

Through the Lens: Milan Josipovic

Hi there everyone! After a wonderful little break in Florida, it's back to the daily grind for me, but also back to blogging and sharing all this great inspiration from Africa with all of you which isn't a "grind" at all! I'll tell you more about my mini-vacation in a little bit, but let's get the week rolling with this Zulu photo shoot by Serbian photographer Milan Josipovic. I was so excited when I got a very nice email from Milan and obviously blown away by his shots which I instantly knew would have to be shared with you. In addition, to the images, Milan was also kind enough to answer a few questions...
