In addition to going on the ever popular mighty safari, Tanzania draw in crowds of tourists aiming to reach the summits of Mount Kilimanjaro! Here, photographer Michael Muller captures scenes from the amazing Summit on the Summit expedition up Mt. Kilimanjaro led by Ethiopian-born artist Kenna to raise awareness of the billion people worldwide who live without clean drinking water.
In addition to capturing both the mountain, Kenna and his famous friends (including Lupe Fiasco, Santi White of Santigold, Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch, and Isabel Lucas), I particularly love the shots Muller captured of the porters. They stand out to me because theirs is the story rarely ever talked about. First, these guys (it's almost exclusively a "guy" thing) climb this mountain on a regular basis leaving me to only wonder what they must think of their travelers who reach summit (at times clinging for dear life to a porter) and burst out in tears of joy (as I would)! Second, they carry everything! That's tents, food, chairs, backpacks, enough water it makes your head spin, sleeping bags, even toilet paper!
While I can only remain curious as to their take on climbing this incredible mountain, the one thing that is certain is that there is no reaching summit without them!
