Through the Lens: Aïda Muluneh

Born in Ethiopia in 1974, Aïda Muluneh grew up like many people I seem to know. She spent some time shuffling between Yemen and England, attending boarding school in Cyprus and eventually settling in Canada. With "settling" being relative, Muluneh was up and out before too long studying film in Washington, DC. Some freelance work with The Washington Post led to becoming part of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art show Ethiopian Passages: Dialogues in the Diaspora. Returning to Ethiopia to experience her country first-hand, her work there eventually led to winning the European Union Prize in the 2007 7th Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie festival in Bamako, Mali. In addition, she recently released her first book Ethiopia: Past /Forward and is currently touring to promote this work.
