Art Scene: Chris Ofili

Today's artist has been in the pipeline for a while now, but I kept getting sidetracked by other obligations (i.e. my day job). That all ends today!

Nigerian/British artist Chris Ofili is all about turning black stereotypes all around and making his audience think twice about these stereotypes. His body of work incorporates his African heritage as well as music and movie influences from urban experiences.

His work has had it's fair share of controversy...mainly his use of elephant dung as part of their materials and one painting of the Virgin Mary that had the previous mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani so upstart, he threw a lawsuit at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for even showing the painting!
